5th Teachers’ Day, 24 th October 2008 at Saarland University

"Continuing our series of successful and popular Teachers’ Days, the English department of Saarland University in cooperation with the ZfL, the LPM and the ILF invites teachers, teacher trainees and students of English to the
5th Teachers’ Day, 24 th October 2008 at Saarland University
8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
However good a learner's vocabulary and grammar may be, they do not guarantee successful communication. This year’s Teachers' Day focuses on some aspects of the socio-cultural situation in which English is used . To acquire intercultural competence, which is necessary for successful mediating (‘Sprachmittlung’), students need to become aware of the often unspoken code followed - and sometimes broken (hence the question mark).
Teachers’ Day 2008 again offers you the opportunity to meet specialists in their field. The morning session begins with a presentation by Barry Tomalin (International House, London), author of Cultural Awareness and Mind the Gaffe: How Not to Offend Friends and Colleagues: a Culture-lite Primer (forthcoming) . His presentation “Visiting the UK – things your teacher never told you” is followed by his workshop “Do they know it’s England? – Training tips for raising cultural awareness.”
